TrailBlazer - A Step Toward Smarter Tracking

Overview

TrailBlazer is an intuitive mobile application designed for tracking walking and running activities in real-time. Built with React Native and powered by Expo, TrailBlazer provides users with the tools to monitor their daily progress, set fitness goals, and visualize their activity patterns. The app stands out with its clean interface, real-time step counting, and distance tracking capabilities, ensuring users can stay motivated and informed on their fitness journey. For me, TrailBlazer marked an exciting new challenge, as I transitioned from web development to mobile app development for the first time, embracing new technologies and mobile-centric methodologies.

Implemented Frameworks & Technologies:

  • React Native: The core framework for developing the app, enabling cross-platform functionality on both iOS and Android devices.

  • Expo: A powerful platform that allowed for streamlined development and testing of the app, providing performance optimization and easy access to native APIs without complex setup.

  • NativeWind: Used for implementing Tailwind CSS-style classes to achieve a responsive, consistent, and aesthetically pleasing interface.

  • AsyncStorage: Utilized for data storage, enabling persistence of user progress and preferences even when the app is closed.

  • Native APIs: For integrating step counting and distance tracking through the device's built-in sensors.

  • Zustand: For handling a global state, which is used in many components and pages throughout the app.

The Creation Process

  1. Building TrailBlazer required stepping into a new environment, transitioning from web development into mobile app creation. Each stage of development involved learning and adapting to mobile-centric paradigms:

  3. Design: Focused on crafting a clean, minimalistic user interface using NativeWind to ensure responsiveness and consistency across devices, while maintaining performance.

  4. Development: Leveraged React Native for app structure, integrating Native APIs for activity tracking, and AsyncStorage for persistent data storage. Expo's streamlined setup allowed me to deploy and test the app with ease, a stark contrast to traditional web development.

  5. Integration: Implemented features such as real-time step counting, daily goals, and a detailed progress overview. AsyncStorage facilitated data persistence without requiring complex back-end integration.

  6. Testing & Deployment: Using Expo, I tested the app across different devices to ensure smooth performance, eventually deploying it through Expo's built-in toolset for preview via Android devices.

  • Data Persistence: Using AsyncStorage, the app retains user data, ensuring goals and achievements remain saved even when the app is closed.

Pages and Navigation

The app is structured into key pages, designed for ease of use and smooth navigation:

Things That I Learned

TrailBlazer provided me with invaluable experience as I transitioned from web development to mobile app development:
